Top Dining
The top of my father's dining table is looking rather sorry for itself.?
I believe my father tried to restore his dining table by painting it with a thin coat of vanish. Needless to say the beautiful glossy finish was destroyed. Can the top be restored-if yes who by?
It is a simple DIY job.
Sand off the old finishes completely to the bare wood.
Wash with a little white spirit, allow to dry.
Buy a cellulose lacquer and put it on in very thin coats (use a sponge or cloth and do it in a circular motion putting just a small amount on at a time.
Sand in between coats with a very fine wire wool - remove all the dust completely before the next coat (use a damp cloth and allow to dry).
Be patient and use about 10 - 15 coats.
After sanding down the last coat (with wire wool) buy some really good quality Bees Wax polish, apply this thinly, allow two hours and polish off - do this about 5 times.
Result - a mirror finish with wood grain enhanced.
To clean just polish with a soft cloth. NEVER put hot cups or plates on it.
If you do mark it, clean off the beeswax with white spirit and then reapply.
Lots of work but gives an amazing finish and well worth the effort.
