Straddling the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, the Ottoman Empire, also known as the Turkish Empire, held sway over three continents for over six centuries. It controlled much of modern-day Western Asia, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, the Caucasus, and North Africa, also furthering its sphere of influence through declarations of allegiance to the Ottoman Sultan and Caliph. Centered in Constantinople, modern-day Istanbul, the Ottoman Empire was an Islamic successor to the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire.

The continued dominance of the Ottoman Empire from 1299 to 1922 depended considerably on the skill and strength of the Ottoman Military. Starting off with irregular bands of raiders, the military soon developed a standing army with fixed salaries. While earlier it was the nobles who paid the soldiers, the king thought it prudent to raise his own standing army, the Kapıkulu. In the Kapıkulu, the Janissaries stood out for their origins, uniforms and marching music. Recruited from amongst the king's Christian subjects as a tax, the Janissaries were in many ways the precursor to the modern army.

The Ottoman Navy was also a considerable force. İmralı Island's conquest in the Sea of Marmara in 1308 marked the first Ottoman naval victory, while the Battle of Zonchio in 1499 was the first fought with ship-based cannons. The navy initiated the conquest of North Africa, with the addition of Algeria and Egypt to the Ottoman Empire in 1517. England was raided in the 17th century with Norway and Iceland following soon after. The navy lost a major battle against combined British-French-Russian navies at the Battle of Navarino in 1827. Just before WWI, England refused delivery of two ships even after full payment, pushing the Empire towards the Germans.

The Ottoman Army was noted for its innovative use of metal in its armor. Unlike Western armor, Ottoman armor was relatively lighter and less extensive. This fact owes as much to a strategic and tactical preference of the army for speed over heavy protection, as to the usually hot climate of the area. Consequently, the use of mail continued for a long time after its use had been abandoned in favor of plate armor by the Europeans.

The Ottoman Army had access to the legendary "Damascus Steel", a hot-forged steel used in Middle Eastern swordmaking from about 1100 to 1700 AD. While speculation exists on the reason behind its legendary strength and sharpness, one explanation is the distinctive pattern consists of alternating bands of brittle but hard iron carbide and softer more flexible iron. Another possibility is that the steel contains a trace amounts of vanadium, which would theoretically strengthen the blade.

The Ottoman soldier's armor of the 15th and 16th centuries was made with interlocking rings of flattened metal, with rectangular steel plates reinforcing the front, underarms and back. Accessories include the "Vambrace", an upper arm defense which sat between the shoulder plates (pauldrons) and elbow (couter). This design allowed ease of movement as well as air to circulate freely, thereby keeping the soldier cool during the heat of battle. The armor was also noted for opulent decorations of Islamic iconography, inlaid with gold or silver in a technique known as "damascening," alluding to is origin in the city of Damascus.

The Ottoman army's pointed helmet, with its sweeping outline, similar to the domes of mosques, has resulted in this type of helmet being recognized today as decidedly Islamic. Later on, the army developed an advanced helmet called the 'chichak', used later by German and English combatants in the domestic 30 Years War and English Civil War respectively. The Germans called it the Zischagge and the English named it Capeline.
