What is an adequate storage system to replace my milk crate technology?
It's embarassing -- I have way too many of these things for an adult of 36 years, but I've yet to find a suitable replacement.
My ideal milk crate replacement:
1) would interlock in both storage mode (stacking) and presentation mode (on its side),
2) would provide or accommodate an optional rail for filing,
3) would be free-standing,
3) would be sturdy yet classy (preferably not plastic),
4) would not put me in danger of going to jail or paying hefty fines.
filing cabinets for the paperwork. if you want something classy for storage--ya gotta pay the price. Go check out what's available to your liking at furniture stores or office supply centers. if you buy cheap (yet crazily overpriced) pressed wood crap--they will fall apart.
What is the first thing that you want to do right after you buy a television (aside from the fact that you want to watch it)? Well, you probably want to get a stand for it. The stand is going to bring the television off the ground and bring it to a level that makes it much more enjoyable to watch. The problem with people is that they don't realize that you're just not trying to get a stand, but something that is going to match the style of your room. It is still a piece of furniture and you need it to fit (from a visual perspective) into the room.
Before you actually purchase a stand you should make sure that you know the extra benefits that you want to get out of it. The main point of a stand is to put the television on, but you also can get more storage space, no storage space, a ton of storage space, etc. You have to get that secondary benefit determined because this will help to limit the amount of different stands you have to search through. If you're someone that likes the minimalist type of stand than you should go with something very simple with two shelves.
Determining the color is the most important part of making sure that your stand is going to match the room. This isn't always easy since you have colored walls, a specific colored floor and even different colored furniture. I find going with a safe look is the best. The varnished oak look is by far the best. It fits in any room of the house and will match your other furniture.
